This week, I am going to unveiling an illustration of Tan Xiang Yuan, a Chinese restaurant opened by local Singapore host actor and celebrity chef Ben Yeo.
The restaurant is located at the heart of Little India Singapore and sits amid a landscape of eclectic shophouses. The design of the building is very unique and modern at the same time. The 2 storey restaurant have a white minimalistic exterior with black borders and arcs.
The restaurant specialises in Chinese style seafood offering mid to high end Chinese cuisine.
Everything starts with research of the building before I drawn the building because I wanted to represent the restaurant in such a way that appeals to both the younger and older of their customers.
With pen and paper, I stopped in front of the location one of the weekends and started sketching quickly hoping to capture the essence of the heritage building. The staffs there are very polite and nice as they allow me to take photos and sketch.
I had also tried out the dishes, their signature seafood hotpot served over the charcoal fire one of the day and it is really an enjoyable experience especially as I am one which enjoys Chinese cuisine. The restaurant specialises in Chinese style seafood and their dishes are very delicious.
The building itself is a newly refurbished with some of the old heritage elements such as part of the building’s original tiled floor and shuttered doors kept as part of the new building design.
My artwork focuses on the drawing of its 2 storey heritage building design and celebrates my Singapore collections of iconic eateries, landmarks and attractions. Characters are also added into the scenery to add elements of fun into the artwork.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend !
