Today is Dragon Boat Festival. It is a traditional Chinese festival which falls on the fifth day of fifth month of the Chinese calendar. It is also known as Duan Yang or Duan Wu Jie.
Dragon Boat Festival involves watching dragon boat and eating rice dumplings. The festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a Chinese poet and minister during the Zhou Dynasty.
I have specially illustrated an artwork of Kim Choo Kueh Chang, a famous food heritage brand, selling rice dumplings, located at the heart of Joo Chiat road Singapore. The illustration showcases the drawing of its exquisite Peranakan shophouse architecture.
Madam Lee Kim Choo is the founder of Nyonya rice dumplings and her name is synonymous with the precinct’s rich Peranakan heritage. Its main factory is located at 60 Joo Chiat and another outlet located at 109 East Coast. Originated from a humble stall and has now grown to be the number one rice dumpling brand in Singapore.
I have illustrated its main outlet at Joo Chiat. its 2 unit shophouse houses a heritage gallery upstairs and sells Peranakan collectables downstairs. It is so popular that it also has a Singapore visitor centre at the ground floor.
My process involves tradition drawing of the architecture and the rice dumplings which come wrapped in bamboo leaves and stuffed with various savoury fillings such as egg, prawn and chicken. Another piece of artwork involves the Peranakan outfit costumes illustration which is an unique aspect of the culture and often comes in bright colours.
Joo Chiat is a lovely heritage neighbourhood and I have created a vibrant artwork brimming with bright colours palette and charismatic interesting fun characters into the landscape of Joo Chiat and Kim Choo Kueh Chang surroundings, creating a beautiful streetscape scene that brings the charming heritage brand and neighbourhood to life.
Wishing everyone a Happy Dragon Boat Festival !!!
