Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre is a great historical wet market located in Tiong Bahru, a popular district in Singapore. The market opened in 1951 as Seng Poh Road Market and in 2004 undergoes a complete renovation and reopened as a brand new 2 storey complex under a new name called Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre.

The new centre has also been endowed with escalator and some parts of the new building had also incorporated the Art Deco style to complement the architecture of the surrounding estates. It is a great place to explore the different rows of shop with fresh wet produce, fruits and fragrant flowers in different colours.

Market is a place filled with endless delicious local food and fresh wet produce. The fresh market is located on the first level consist of 255 provision shops and wet produce stalls and the food court is located on the 2nd level and houses 85 food stalls. The food court is known for specialising in Chinese breakfast and local specialities.

Tiong Bahru wet market and food centre served as the big part of Singapore’s multicultural society. In Singapore, wet market is a place where we tag along with parents during the weekends and help to pack bags. I always accompany my mother from stalls to stalls which I still do these days to help carry the wet produce. It is a joy and great experience as I can find out more about the wonderful market culture of Singapore.

Visiting the wet market is a distinct part of Singapore culture and Tiong Bahru market is one of the most familiar landmark and cornerstone of cultural and culinary heritage.

Through my illustration, I hope to bring everyone to this vibrant and colourful cultural rich markets to experience the wet markets of Singapore and to immerse in the beautiful charm of urban Singapore.

Illustrating this historical location is a great drawing experience for me and I felt a sense of accomplishment after finishing the drawing. To begin, I Illustrated the exterior of the market capturing its vibrant bustling atmosphere and the Art Deco style. Characters were slowly introduced to help establish the surrounding interest which is essential in a busy market scene. Bright coloured from my colour palette were added to draw in audience attention. I uses a lot of imagination, drawing lively sketch of the urban environment that truly reflects its character and personality, offering a fresh perspective to one of the country’s most treasured building.
