Today is Deepavali, one of the most major cultural festival in Singapore also known as Diwali, a celebration that marks the triumph of good over evil.
At this important festival every year, the streets of Little India will be greeted by bright lamps as well as colourful sparkling lights with oil lamps. I had specially made a visit to Little India and Indian Heritage Centre earlier. It has been an incredible experience for me and provide inspiration for my Diwali illustrations.
Indian Heritage Centre is a centre which details the journey, history, culture and contribution of the Indian Community in Singapore. The centre opened in 2015, it have 4 levels with galleries and museums. It is located within the colourful precinct in Singapore, the Little India Street. The centre is under the management of Nation Heritage Board and is designed by Robert Greg Shand architects. The landmark and building is very iconic with traditional Indian and modern design architecture elements.
During the daytime, the building’s main external facade act as a reflective mirror reflecting the colourful shophouses along the streets. During the evening time, the building comes to life with lights revealing colourful and rich colours of mural wall.
In order to tap into the joyful atmosphere of the festive event, I created an illustration artwork that embodies the collective spirit and significance of the Festival of Lights.
Indian community is a richly diverse mix of cultures in Singapore. I always love the richness of Indian art, culture and traditions. I love observing people and the different cultures in Singapore and it has been really significant in helping me develop creative ideas and look at Singapore from a different perspective.
My artwork emphasizes togetherness something that is of utmost importance in the festival and celebration that are also at the heart of Deepavali while at the same time spreading a heartfelt message about joy, prosperity and positivity.
Bright colours and oil lamps are used to capture the essence of the festival with drawing of characters in colourful saree outfits with Garba traditional dancing. Artwork also brings alive the drawing of the impressive architecture of Indian heritage centre and providing the vibrant vibes at the streets of Little India Singapore.
Wishing everyone joy and happiness in this Deepavali festival. Happy Diwali !!
