Diwali at Little India

Today is Diwali, the Festival of Lights. To celebrate the festival, I have illustrated Tekka Place, a shopping location with rich multicultural heritage.

It is an integrated development located at Little India, a project jointly developed by Lum Chang holdings Limited and fund managed by Lasalle Investment Management Asia Pte Ltd. Tekka Place comprises a 10 storey main building, a 7 storey annex block with a rooftop deck, Citadines Rochor’s serviced residences and 5 levels of parking. It is positioned as a lifestyle destination that draws locals while seeking to enhance tourists experience. The main architect of the building is architecture firm Ong & Ong Pte Ltd.

Deepavali/ Diwali also known as the Festival of Lights celebrates lights over darkness, good over evil. There are lots of symbols of Diwali. Lotus flower is the lotus features prominently in Hindu iconography. It is closely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity who is given a special welcome into homes during Deepavali. Every year, there is always lots to look forward to during the festival, among them are the iconic decoration and the dazzling lights.

Another symbol is the floor art which is colourful and made with dyed rice, flour and flowers shaped into free form designs. I have also drawn the traditional lamps, elephants and peacocks which are also some of the symbols of Diwali. Lamps are the highlights of celebration, often lit at dusk as the light symbolises the sun and signifies light over darkness. Peacock are the sign of good luck, beauty and glory while elephants are the favourite gods of Hindu faith as Ganesha is depicted to be in the form of an elephant.

I have drawn the distinct architecture of the building which is the main highlights of my artwork. Cultural references such as the lotus petal which is a prevalent motif in Indian culture are carefully illustrated as patterns on its screen. For my artwork, I have used bright colours and lights of lamps fill the street of the shopping mall, combining the vibes of Indian Fashion and the symbols of Diwali, bringing everyone on a journey to rediscover the beauty of Little India. The illustration apart from celebrating the Festival of Lights and paying homage to Singapore multi culture heritage, it also serve the purpose of revealing the charm of Little India precinct as I captured the vibrancy of the streets with bright colourful art.

I hope my bright illustration of artwork drives away the darkness and spreads lights of happiness to everyone. Happy Diwali !
