Today is Hari Raya and I have illustrated the Malay Heritage Centre which is built in 1840 by Sultan Ali, the son of Sultan Hussein Shah. The centre is a must visit destination for people interested in the history of the Singapore Malay Community.
The centre showcases the tradition and culture of the Malays in Singapore. It is a place where you can have deep knowledge of the wonderful culture of Malays. Hari Raya Puasa is an important occasion celebrated by all Muslims all over the world and Baju Kurung is a tradition outfit for Hari Raya. I have illustrated Amira and Sabina, two beautiful ladies in Kurung outfit illustration with simple striking colour choices. I hope to give the characters a cool fresh look.
The main architectural features of the centre are two storey palace, a combination of Palladian style, building is a perfect example of European Palladian architecture. It combines tradition Malay motifs with Palladian style. Palladian style is a style popular in England. The compound exterior of the main building was enclosed by a perimeter wall with plants surrounding it. It looks like a combination of a house and a hotel resort.
I have visited the centre a couple of months ago and take into consideration the main architecture elements of the building. To begin with, I do a rough sketch of the building, followed by detail outline pen drawing. Digital colouring which is my favourite part of illustration is the last step. In all my illustration, I always tried to match the colours as of the building as closely as possible. I love this location as the atmosphere is great and wonderful. It is also a great experience to find out more about the Malay cultures in Singapore.
There are different race, religious and culture in Singapore and it formed the backbone of the nation. Cultural heritage is what makes Singapore unique. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Muslim friends a wonderful Hari Raya. Hope my illustration brings everyone together.
