The theme for my this week’s illustration artwork is “When fashion meets nature” and I had illustrated Jewel Changi Airport’s unique architectural landscape, the HSBC rain vortex and the Shiseido forest valley.
Jewel is an urban location, part luxury lifestyle mall, part indoor nature forest and public leisure attraction. You can take a stroll on the skywalk, enjoying the waterfall and the lush greenery. You can also shop at your leisure at the many well known fashion and sports brand.
The architecture of the rain vortex are characterised by a distinctive dome shaped facade made of glass and steel. At the apex of Jewel’s glass roof is an oculus that showers water down to the centre of the building. Designed by Moshe Sadie, an iconic feature with the water flowing through a hole at the top of the dome down to the basement. It is the largest indoor waterfall at 40 metres height in the world.
I had incorporated the 5 elements of nature to my artwork. The 5 elements of nature are the realms of universal energy and are perfectly suited for the nature theme illustration this week. Using colours as expression of the 5 elements, each element are associated with the different colours of nature.
I had reinterpreted the ideology of elements of nature as the theme for my fashion illustration together with my architecture drawing of the dome, designed to reinsure and reconnect with Mother Nature.
Fire is an element which symbolise energy. It is denoted by the colour red. I gave a modern twist to the slit design skirt adding sexiness to give Rachel the appearance of fire and passion.
Wood element has the love of adventure, the motivation to spring forward and I introduce this element through green colour. I wanted to bring in more wood to the character Winnie by dressing her up in green, matching her motivation personality.
Water signifies love and purification associated with oceans. Blue is deep and still like ocean and dynamic like the sea. I wanted to give Florence the feeling of sensuality and therefore I coloured her in blue sexy blouse and skirt.
Metal is an element that signifies a true leader of environment related to beauty. To activate metal qualities, grey metallic colour is the perfect outfit match. Jessica dressed in metallic outfit expressing her elegance and cultivated characteristic.
Earth element is represented by colour brown, symbolises bringing balance and harmony to our planet. Andie walked in the most soothing brown colour creating an aura of kindness and happiness.
An architecture illustrator and artist, I always love nature and my fashion illustration collection merges characters with nature inspired by colours of 5 elements against the backdrop of HSBC rain vortex waterfall. All the 5 models showed off their outfit merging fashion with the natural landscape.
Illustration capture the dynamic energy of the surrounding using expressive brush stroke and vibrant color palette. I captured the intricacy of architecture details of the dome through carefully initial pen and pencil before applying digital colours on top of it.
I hope to enhance Jewel’s attractiveness and bring out the beauty of it, portraying the location as a place of immense beauty and wonders of the world.
