  • meet furama city centre

This week, I had brought my art style to create an illustration on a hotel building I adored. I had illustrated the Furama City Centre, a hotel completed by Alfred Wong Partnership in 1984. It is one of the oldest hotel around Chinatown area.

Alfred Wong is its primary architecture together with his firm AWP architects (formerly Alfred Wong Partnership) It is located in the heart of vibrant Chinatown. It has more than 400 rooms catering to leisure and business travellers and sits on a 4 storey podium which houses retail and commercial section.

Building was cladded in a combination of trendy brown and grey colour. Building elements are made up of a series of tapering piers arranged diagonally. Regardless of which angle you view it, hotel is very eye catching and the curves and lines always dominate the street view.

The podium aligns perfectly with the street and the tower stands independently. Building is designed in such a way that it complements the surrounding street scene.

My drawing is designed to entice viewer to spend time scanning the piers. This is a building I simply adore. I always feel that it takes an open mind to find that something special to make for an interesting subject.

I always enjoyed the process of drawing on location. I do a little bit of research on the history of the building and this time I start to draw with ink instead of pencil into my sketchbook.

It is a very interesting process and a challenge to me as the piers of the hotel are difficult to sketch in the beginning. In the end, I am satisfied with the overall design work.

I loved to tell stories with my sketch illustration. This time the story starts with Emily, she used to travel all the time for work and would usually spend her summer at hotels located around the central side of Singapore. Furama City Centre and Furama  riverfront are some of her favourite hotel staycation. Stepping inside the hotel, she immediately immersed in the aesthetic of modern Singapore.

It is a world where old meets new and rooms are elegant in its own right and very enticing. The hotel is a perfect balance of urban street scene and elegant architectural design.

There will always be challenge ahead, we have to stand tall, have hope, be optimistic and start everyday on a positive note. Hope the illustration generate positive thoughts and brings positive energy to everyone.
