This week, I am going to document and illustrate the Great Madras Hotel, a boutique hotel located at the heart of Little India Singapore, a very buzzing area with a colourful past.
This is a hotel that hides in the back alley of Little India and it is a hotel with a retro aesthetic. It has a unique sense of place that makes it different from others and the sense of place characteristics include culture, history, heritage and architecture design.
Boutique hotels are the models of the hotelier world, sexy and fashionable. Successful boutique hotels like Great Madras have the qualities of home. It has a cool retro space, Art Deco interior and a cosy glamour bar.
The architecture of the building is designed in such a way that imbued with characters that is drawn from its locality. Designed by Farm Architect and have undergone a 24 month refurbishment that was completed in 2018. The newly revamped design aims to emulate the colourful Little India’s vibrant and culture insights. The Art Deco of its interior lends an extra contemporary edge to its overall experience.
I always like to construct my technical drawings using pencil which gives clarity in the beginning. The hotel has four brick walls which is a challenge to draw. I had firstly tried to define the heights of the bricks and wall then proceed to draw the lines and provide the colours. When the walls are done, I proceed to draw the other areas of the hotel, making sure everything is in good perspective. I tried to match the colour scheme of the hotel as closely as possible. For this illustration, I hope to inject a retro vibes in it to match the retro experience at this boutique hotel. The hotel itself is a classic art and would make a good travel poster in the living room.
In this illustration, I have a glamorous lady by the name of secretary Kim, whom drove a retro purple car roaming in the colourful streets of Little India and paying a staycation visit at this Art Deco inspired hotel.
